A blessed light that had shined in the skies above had sat lower than the sun, but higher than the Earth. An island in the sky had held this light at the moment as it could be seen from afar, nevertheless, it seemed to attract the attention the Earthbound creatures, those who weren’t on the floating mass, stare into the sky at the bright eruption of heavenly light. It had come to pass that it was the sign of the ancient jewel was resonating with it’s protector for a whim.
The light soon died down to a low glow on the altar that was speckled with spots of ice. Those spots that were unfilled ran water from around their structure; cold water that had slowly ran off the stair pyramid and back onto the lushes green grass that the structure was built on. The flakes and sleet of ice along the massive pillars and structures surrounding that main altar had let the same moisture run off them at that time. It wasn’t a sure thing that it would remain that way, already, it seemed already that the bitter cold was freezing some of the droplets back into their formal place.
”Well…that should keep this place warm for a little while.”
A single abnormal hand composted of a thumb and two spiked knuckles had slid off the top side of the massive green jewel. His purple eyes taking in the site of the altar and surrounding area. Beyond the trees and all was covered in ice, but it was only this place where the winter whiteness had randomized in some spots. It was because of the power of the Master Emerald’s sacred light that this place remained the way it was. The least he could do was make sure that he and the artifact he transcended time to guard was comfortably nestled in it’s appropriate setting.
He reached his gloved hands to each other rubbing them quickly into a friction filled tension, and then separated them as he blew his hot breath upon them. It was cold, and he hated to admit that now instead of the endless power of the Master Emerald that had supplied him with the strength to defend it as a trade off, he was now depending on heat to survive this eternal coldness that seemed to defy the seasons themselves. What he would give to see a single flower that had stood near the altar of the Master Emerald.
It would be a good sign…a great sign.
Still, it was only wishful thinking.
He had turned away from the Master Emerald as he started to step down. Stopping mid way along the altar, he could feel that if he proceeded to move any further, he’d be away from it’s radiant light. He took it to heart as he sat down roosting himself mid-way down the altar and put his arms in a fold. His breathes giving out a foggy breath of visible air up til the point it faded into the atmosphere.
Forever vigilant, he stuck to his duty, enduring this harsh temperate all together.
At that moment…a sigh escaped the mouth of the Echidna.
”It‘s going to be dark soon.”
That sigh most likely a relief that he’d lived through another day of his duty without freezing, or even another day where he had to take the risk again. His mind still having that wishful thinking as his eyes had digressed from his front view only to see to the right from his high point looking for a single flower to bloom.
After a while, he ignored that hope and resumed his duty. Eyes closing into a solemn peacefulness as his ears sense sharpened to take over for them. His semi-sleep was sound and his mind calm.
Day in...day out, this was his life; No matter the man, beast, or season that oppossed him.
